excerpt from "A Cooking Revolution: How Clean Energy and Cookstoves Are Saving Lives" by Chef José Andrés, June 7, 2016

Cooking: it's a simple act that has brought families around the world together for thousands and thousands of years.

As a chef, I can think of few things more beautiful than that. However, I also know how deadly such a simple act can be , not only to our health, but to our environment.

Think about it: For Americans, turning on the stove means simply turning a knob or switch. For people living in developing countries, particularly women and children, it means hours of collecting fuels like firewood, dung, or coal to burn in a rudimentary, smoky cookstove or over an open fire. The result is a constant source of toxic smoke that families breathe in daily, causing diseases like child pneumonia, heart disease, and lung cancer ,  not to mention taking a child away from her education.

In fact, diseases caused by smoke from open fires and stoves claim 4.3 million lives every year. That's more than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined.

How does the author's use of language and word choice affect this passage?

Contractions and first-person pronouns make the passage seem conversational.

Phrases such as "Think about it" and "As a chef" give the impression that the author takes himself too seriously.

What should we know about Wallace as a governor?

Wallace was the Governor of Alabama during the Selma civil rights movement, which advocated for African-American voting rights. Even though half of the area's population was colored at the time of the movement, only 1% of voters were colored.

Wallace ordered repression of the movement and was opposed to segregation of white and colored people. As a result, the statement that Alabama has the right to continue racial segregation policies comes the closest to what Wallace could have said during a speech.

Jonathan Swift’s ‘A Modest Proposal’ is a satirical essay meant to underline the problems of both the English and the Irish in 1729. Answers

The entire book "A Modest Proposal" is satirical since it parodies other large proposals that individuals have put forward to address significant social issues. The proposition itself—that the Irish should eat their infants—is sarcastic as well since it mocks those who put forth foolish ideas under the guise of being useful. Swift's assertion that boys and girls are not "saleable commodities" is a particularly effective illustration of this point since it illustrates the cynicism of those who push for the reduction of all issues to economic ones. Swift's statement that "those who are frugal" may use an infant's corpse to make women's gloves or men's boots is a similar example of how the whole animal may be utilised for several reasons.

What is a PQC writing?

Your grade will significantly increase if you learn to thoroughly analyse texts. This approach is referred to as PEE by some educators (PEE). Some people refer to it as a point-evidence-analyse (PEA) or a point-quote-comment (PQC). Everything is the same. Usually, my own sentences sound more like PEEPEPEAEEAEPEAEEA than PEA. PEA, though, is an excellent place to begin.

Method 1

Select a quotation that uses compelling language, analogies, or stark contrasts. You will use this quotation as "proof." It should take eight words or less to complete this quote. Reduced length is preferable.

For instance, "You're going to soar and fly, darling youngster."

Now, pay attention to the situation. The fantastic book Wonder by RJ Palacio features a youngster who is brutally harassed and has a terrible facial deformity (like in the photo but worse).

2. Within your primary quotation, underline the important terms. Now describe the meanings of the terms and how they connect to, contrast, and link to the situation.

PEA-PEE-PQC, students

The phrase "beautiful child" might be taken to mean that August is cherished and has inner beauty, as seen by how the other characters act. Since August is neither "beautiful" nor even "normal," this remark might potentially be read as satirical. The word "you" in this remark might appear insignificant, yet it truly conveys that someone cares about and believes in August. Fly is a metaphor for August having superhuman strength, freedom, and ability; this conjures images of him having a strong personality and being able to pursue his dreams.

Select two sentences that describe who Jefferson's intended audience is and how he uses the elements of an argumentative essay to reach them

Answers

Jefferson's intended audience for his argumentative essay can be identified through the sentences in which he addresses the people of the United States and appeals to their sense of patriotism and justice. Two sentences that describe his intended audience and how he uses the elements of an argumentative essay to reach them are:

Thomas Jefferson's intended audience for the Declaration of Independence was primarily the American colonists, as well as other political leaders and potentially foreign nations. He aimed to rally support for the cause of independence from British rule and persuade his audience to unite in their pursuit of freedom and self-governance.

In his argumentative essay, Jefferson adeptly used various elements to reach his intended audience. Firstly, he employed emotional appeals to connect with the colonists' shared experiences and grievances. He highlighted the injustices and oppressions they had endured under British rule, invoking a sense of outrage and resentment. By tapping into their emotions, Jefferson aimed to generate sympathy and solidarity among the colonists.

Secondly, Jefferson employed logical reasoning to present a compelling case for independence. He outlined a series of grievances against the British Crown, systematically building a logical argument for why the colonies should separate from Britain. He cited specific examples of tyrannical actions and violations of the colonists' rights, using them as evidence to support his claims.

Furthermore, Jefferson infused his argumentative essay with appeals to shared values and ideals. He emphasized concepts such as natural rights, equality, and self-determination, drawing upon Enlightenment philosophy and the colonists' belief in their inherent rights as individuals. By aligning his arguments with these widely held beliefs, Jefferson sought to foster a sense of unity and purpose among his audience.

Overall, Jefferson's strategic use of emotional appeals, logical reasoning, and appeals to shared values enabled him to effectively reach his intended audience. His persuasive rhetoric played a pivotal role in mobilizing support for the cause of independence, inspiring the colonists to take action and ultimately leading to the birth of a new nation.
