A professor wants to determine the importance of nutrition on exam performance. He proposes withholding food from volunteer subjects 48 hours prior to their final exam in his class. He will then compare their exam performance with the performance of classmates.

What will an ethics review committee likely decide about this study?

A. It will likely be approved, because students are unlikely to suffer significant harm.

B. It will likely be denied, because students may suffer mental and physical harm.

C. It will likely be approved, because there is no other way to test this hypothesis.

D. It will likely be denied, because subjects are deceived without receiving a debriefing.

E. The committee will recommend that the study be conducted on animals, instead

Answers

In the above case, ethics review commmittee will likely be denied, because students may suffer mental and physical harm. (Option B)

What is the rationale for the above response?

Withholding food from volunteer subjects 48 hours prior to an exam can cause serious physical and psychological harm, including dehydration, weakness, fatigue, dizziness, and poor cognitive function. This type of deprivation can also be psychologically distressing and cause anxiety and stress, which can further affect exam performance.

Therefore, any research proposal that involves withholding food or other basic needs from human subjects is likely to be denied by an ethics review committee, as it violates the ethical principles of non-maleficence and beneficence.

These principles require researchers to avoid causing harm to their subjects and to ensure that the potential benefits of the study outweigh any potential harms.

Nonmaterial culture has no relationship with physical objects.

Thus, Non-material culture, or human achievements, is made up of intangible artifacts. Examples include custom, tradition, language, art, literature, religion, values, and other concepts.

Non-material culture, in contrast to material culture, changes more slowly and persists for a longer period of time since it is the passing of ideas from one generation to the next.

Nonmaterial culture consists of inventions and abstract concepts that are not materially manifest. In other words, a culture's nonmaterial culture includes all intangible objects produced and shared over time by its members.

In his famous Bobo doll experiment, Bandura found that children who observed an adult model engaging in aggressive behavior towards a Bobo doll were more likely to imitate that behavior themselves. However, Bandura did not specifically study the effects of punishment on aggression in this particular experiment. Based on the table, the school fair makes $100 per person in attendance. If 1,200 people attend, the school fair will make $120,000.

The school district office uses 70% of this money for maintenance costs and other expenses, leaving 30% for profit.

Therefore, the school district office will make a profit of $36,000 if 1,200 people attend the school fair.

How to calculate the amount

Total money made from the school fair: $120,000

Amount used for maintenance costs and other expenses: 70% * $120,000 = $84,000

Here is the formula for calculating the profit from a school fair:

Profit = Total amount of money made from the fair - Amount used for maintenance costs and other expenses

In this case, the profit is calculated as follows:

What is the Israeli perspective on the Holy Land?

The Israeli/Palestinian conflict is one of massive importance to the world. It has at times  undoubtedly brought out the worst in its conflicting adversaries, the primarily Jewish state of Israel and  the as yet unborn state of “Palestine,” with its Muslim Arab majority. The frustration and hardship  produced by this conflict have led world leaders to seek a peaceful solution that is acceptable to both

Israelis and Palestinians.st Jerusalem off from the rest of the West Bank. It has encouraged  settlements that surround the city and it has annexed lands around the city, causing confusion regarding  the real boundaries of Jerusalem, making it nearly impossible for Jerusalem to ever become the capital  of a Palestinian state. Rather than compromising on this issue, the Israeli government has made self preservation its primary goal.

The final, and in many ways the most frustrating issue that complicates the Israeli/Palestinian  conflict is the problem of extremism. While there are many Israelis who strive for peace and desire an  end to the conflict with the Arab world, there are others who consistently oppose peace efforts. In the  modern world, images of terrorists perpetuate stereotypes regarding Arabs and the religion of Islam.

Seldom, however, are the victors of conflict portrayed as extremists. In Israel, there are many who  oppose compromise with Palestinians, as well as the rest of the Arab world, on the grounds that any  compromise threatens the existence and security of Israel. Whether the issue is settlements, refugees,  Jerusalem or a controversial 310-mile “separation wall” currently being built along the West Bank, Israeli extremists threaten the peace process due to their beliefs and fears. One strikingly tragic  example is the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Itzak Rabin in 1995. Rabin was the architect of  peace agreements with Palestinian leaders. Conservative Israelis, fearing changes and compromise with those they viewed as terrorists, opposed Rabin’s policies. Finally, an Israeli radical (not a  Palestinian terrorist) murdered the Israeli Prime Minister.

Events such as these demonstrate the  profound difficulty in achieving peace in Israel/Palestine. Acting on what they believe is best for Israel’s future, extremists have done their best to derail the peace process. Recently, Prime Minister  Ariel Sharon led a removal of the entire Israeli presence from the Gaza Strip, while permanently  solidifying its position in West Bank settlements. Despite the fact that this move may have protected  Israeli civilians and soldiers alike, extremists, including those from Sharon’s own party, have opposed  this action, feeling that Israel must not give in to Palestinians at all.

The Israeli/Palestinian conflict is clearly one of great complexity and frustration. While  numerous peace efforts have been made, the conflict drags on and on. What makes this conflict so  frustrating is that compromise has become quite difficult. As long as the state of Israel feels that its security and even survival are threatened, it will continue to act in ways that anger Palestinians. From  its first armed conflict in 1948, to the Six Day War of 1967, to the modern settlements, refugees and  Jerusalem problem, Israel has constantly faced what it perceives as a noble uphill struggle. While it  seems as though the entire world yearns for Middle East peace, it has remained an elusive goal.

Solve the following differential equation with initial conditions: y''=e^-2t+10e^4t ; y(0)=1, y'(0)=0

Solve the following differential equation with initial conditions: y''=e^-2t+10e^4t ; y(0)=1, y'(0)=0

Answers

Answer:

Option A.  \(y = \frac{1}{4} e^{-2t} + \frac{5}{8} e^{4t} - 2 t + \frac{1}{8}\)

Explanation:

This is a second order DE, so we'll need to integrate twice, applying initial conditions as we go.  At a couple points, we'll need to apply u-substitution.

Round 1:

To solve the differential equation, write it as differentials, move the differential, and integrate both sides:

\(y''=e^{-2t}+10e^{4t}\)

\(\frac{dy'}{dt}=e^{-2t}+10e^{4t}\)

\(dy'=[e^{-2t}+10e^{4t}]dt\)

\(\int dy'=\int [e^{-2t}+10e^{4t}]dt\)

Applying various properties of integration:

\(\int dy'=\int e^{-2t} dt + \int 10e^{4t}dt\\\int dy'=\int e^{-2t} dt + 10\int e^{4t}dt\)

Prepare for integration by u-substitution

\(\int dy'=\int e^{u_1} dt + 10\int e^{u_2}dt\), letting \(u_1=-2t\) and \(u_2=4t\)

Find dt in terms of \(u_1 \text{ and } u_2\)

\(u_1=-2t\\du_1=-2dt\\-\frac{1}{2}du_1=dt\)     \(u_2=4t\\du_2=4dt\\\frac{1}{4}du_2=dt\)

\(\int dy'=\int e^{u_1} dt + 10\int e^{u_2}dt\\\int dy'=\int e^{u_1} (-\frac{1}{2} du_1) + 10\int e^{u_2} (\frac{1}{4} du_2)\\\int dy'=-\frac{1}{2} \int e^{u_1} (du_1) + 10 *\frac{1}{4} \int e^{u_2} (du_2)\)

Using the Exponential rule (don't forget your constant of integration):

\(y'=-\frac{1}{2} e^{u_1} + 10 *\frac{1}{4}e^{u_2} +C_1\)

Back substituting for \(u_1 \text{ and } u_2\):

\(y'=-\frac{1}{2} e^{(-2t)} + 10 *\frac{1}{4}e^{(4t)} +C_1\\y'=-\frac{1}{2} e^{-2t} + \frac{5}{2}e^{4t} +C_1\\\)

Finding the constant of integration

Given initial condition  \(y'(0)=0\)

\(y'(t)=-\frac{1}{2} e^{-2t} + \frac{5}{2}e^{4t} +C_1\\0=y'(0)=-\frac{1}{2} e^{-2(0)} + \frac{5}{2}e^{4(0)} +C_1\\0=-\frac{1}{2} (1) + \frac{5}{2}(1) +C_1\\-2=C_1\\\)

The first derivative with the initial condition applied: \(y'(t)=-\frac{1}{2} e^{-2t} + \frac{5}{2}e^{4t} -2\\\)

Round 2:

Integrate again:

\(y' =-\frac{1}{2} e^{-2t} + \frac{5}{2}e^{4t} -2\\\frac{dy}{dt} =-\frac{1}{2} e^{-2t} + \frac{5}{2}e^{4t} -2\\dy =[-\frac{1}{2} e^{-2t} + \frac{5}{2}e^{4t} -2]dt\\\int dy =\int [-\frac{1}{2} e^{-2t} + \frac{5}{2}e^{4t} -2]dt\\\int dy =\int -\frac{1}{2} e^{-2t} dt + \int \frac{5}{2}e^{4t} dt - \int 2 dt\\\int dy = -\frac{1}{2} \int e^{-2t} dt + \frac{5}{2} \int e^{4t} dt - 2 \int dt\\\)

\(y = -\frac{1}{2} * -\frac{1}{2} e^{-2t} + \frac{5}{2} * \frac{1}{4} e^{4t} - 2 t + C_2\\y(t) = \frac{1}{4} e^{-2t} + \frac{5}{8} e^{4t} - 2 t + C_2\)

Finding the constant of integration :

Given initial condition  \(y(0)=1\)

\(1=y(0) = \frac{1}{4} e^{-2(0)} + \frac{5}{8} e^{4(0)} - 2 (0) + C_2\\1 = \frac{1}{4} (1) + \frac{5}{8} (1) - (0) + C_2\\1 = \frac{7}{8} + C_2\\\frac{1}{8}=C_2\)

So, \(y(t) = \frac{1}{4} e^{-2t} + \frac{5}{8} e^{4t} - 2 t + \frac{1}{8}\)

Checking the solution

\(y(t) = \frac{1}{4} e^{-2t} + \frac{5}{8} e^{4t} - 2 t + \frac{1}{8}\)

This matches our initial conditions here \(y(0) = \frac{1}{4} e^{-2(0)} + \frac{5}{8} e^{4(0)} - 2 (0) + \frac{1}{8} = 1\)

Going back to the function, differentiate:

\(y' = [\frac{1}{4} e^{-2t} + \frac{5}{8} e^{4t} - 2 t + \frac{1}{8}]'\\y' = [\frac{1}{4} e^{-2t}]' + [\frac{5}{8} e^{4t}]' - [2 t]' + [\frac{1}{8}]'\\y' = \frac{1}{4} [e^{-2t}]' + \frac{5}{8} [e^{4t}]' - 2 [t]' + [\frac{1}{8}]'\)

Apply Exponential rule and chain rule, then power rule

\(y' = \frac{1}{4} e^{-2t}[-2t]' + \frac{5}{8} e^{4t}[4t]' - 2 [t]' + [\frac{1}{8}]'\\y' = \frac{1}{4} e^{-2t}(-2) + \frac{5}{8} e^{4t}(4) - 2 (1) + (0)\\y' = -\frac{1}{2} e^{-2t} + \frac{5}{2} e^{4t} - 2\)

This matches our first order step and the initial conditions there.

\(y'(0) = -\frac{1}{2} e^{-2(0)} + \frac{5}{2} e^{4(0)} - 2=0\)

Going back to the function y', differentiate:

\(y' = -\frac{1}{2} e^{-2t} + \frac{5}{2} e^{4t} - 2\\y'' = [-\frac{1}{2} e^{-2t} + \frac{5}{2} e^{4t} - 2]'\\y'' = [-\frac{1}{2} e^{-2t}]' + [\frac{5}{2} e^{4t}]' - [2]'\\y'' = -\frac{1}{2} [e^{-2t}]' + \frac{5}{2} [e^{4t}]' - [2]'\)

Applying the Exponential rule and chain rule, then power rule

\(y'' = -\frac{1}{2} e^{-2t}[-2t]' + \frac{5}{2} e^{4t}[4t]' - [2]'\\y'' = -\frac{1}{2} e^{-2t}(-2) + \frac{5}{2} e^{4t}(4) - (0)\\y'' = e^{-2t} + 10 e^{4t}\)

So our proposed solution is a solution to the differential equation, and satisfies the initial conditions given.

Answer:

\(\textsf{A.} \quad y=\dfrac{1}{4}e^{-2t}+\dfrac{5}{8}e^{4t}-2t+\dfrac{1}{8}\)

Explanation:

Given:

\(\begin{cases}y''=e^{-2t}+10e^{4t}\\y\:\!(0)=1\\y'(0)=0\end{cases}\)

To find y', integrate y'' and use the condition y'(0) = 0.

\(\begin{aligned}\displaystyle y'=\int y''&=\int e^{-2t}+10e^{4t}\; dt\\\\&=\int e^{-2t}\; dx+10 \int e^{4t}\; dt\\\\&=-\dfrac{1}{2}e^{-2t}+10\cdot \dfrac{1}{4}e^{4t}+C\\\\&=-\dfrac{1}{2}e^{-2t}+\dfrac{5}{2}e^{4t}+C\end{aligned}\)

To find the value of the constant of integration, C, substitute the given condition y'(0) = 0:

\(\begin{aligned}\displaystyle y'(0)&=0\\\\-\dfrac{1}{2}e^{-2(0)}+\dfrac{5}{2}e^{4(0)}+C&=0\\\\-\dfrac{1}{2}(1)+\dfrac{5}{2}(1)+C&=0\\\\-\dfrac{1}{2}+\dfrac{5}{2}+C&=0\\\\2+C&=0\\\\C&=-2\end{aligned}\)

Therefore, the equation for y' is:

\(y'=-\dfrac{1}{2}e^{-2t}+\dfrac{5}{2}e^{4t}-2\)

To find y, integrate y' and use the condition y(0) = 1:

\(\begin{aligned}\displaystyle y=\int y'&=\int -\dfrac{1}{2}e^{-2t}+\dfrac{5}{2}e^{4t}-2\;dt\\\\&=-\dfrac{1}{2}\int e^{-2t}\;dt+\dfrac{5}{2}\int e^{4t}\;dt-\int 2\;dt\\\\&=-\dfrac{1}{2} \cdot -\dfrac{1}{2}e^{-2t}+\dfrac{5}{2}\cdot \dfrac{1}{4}e^{4t}-2t+C\\\\&=\dfrac{1}{4}e^{-2t}+\dfrac{5}{8}e^{4t}-2t+C\end{aligned}\)

To find the value of the constant of integration, C, substitute the given condition y(0) = 1:

\(\begin{aligned}\displaystyle y(0)&=1\\\\\dfrac{1}{4}e^{-2(0)}+\dfrac{5}{8}e^{4(0)}-2(0)+C&=1\\\\\dfrac{1}{4}(1)+\dfrac{5}{8}(1)-0+C&=1\\\\\dfrac{1}{4}+\dfrac{5}{8}+C&=1\\\\\dfrac{7}{8}+C&=1\\\\C&=\dfrac{1}{8}\end{aligned}\)

Therefore the equation for y is:

\(\boxed{y=\dfrac{1}{4}e^{-2t}+\dfrac{5}{8}e^{4t}-2t+\dfrac{1}{8}}\)

Question 21 is based on the following excerpts.
“In the end, then, neither the abolition of slavery nor Reconstruction succeeded in resolving the debate over the meaning of freedom in American life….
Alone among the societies that abolished slavery in the nineteenth century, the United States, for a moment, offered the freedmen a measure of political control over their own destinies. However brief its sway, Reconstruction allowed scope for a remarkable political and social mobilization of the black community. It opened doors of opportunity that could never be completely closed. Reconstruction transformed the lives of Southern blacks in ways unmeasurable by statistics and unreachable by law. It raised their expectations and aspirations, redefined their status in relation to the larger society, and allowed space for the creation of institutions that enabled them to survive the repression that followed. And it established constitutional principles of civil and political equality that, while flagrantly violated after Reconstruction, planted the seeds of future struggle.”
Eric Foner, “The New View of Reconstruction,” American Heritage, 1983
“Reconstruction, which was far from radical, constituted the most democratic decades of the nineteenth century, South or North, so much so that it amounted to the first progressive era in the nation’s history. Just ten years after Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney endorsed the expansion of slavery into the western territories and announced that black Americans, even if born free, could not be citizens of the republic, blacks were fighting for the franchise in northern states; battling to integrate the streetcars in Charleston, New Orleans, and San Francisco; funding integrated public schools; and voting and standing for office in the erstwhile…. Black veterans, activists, ministers, assemblymen, registrars, poll workers, editors, and a handful of dedicated white allies risked their lives in this cause, nearly brought down a racist president, but ultimately lost their fight because of white violence.”
Douglas R. Egerton. The Wars of Reconstruction, 2014

Using the excerpts, answer A, B, and C.
Briefly explain ONE major difference between Foner’s and Egerton’s historical interpretations of the success or failure of Reconstruction.

What is the Reconstruction Era in the United States?

The Reconstruction era (1861–1901), during which the United States dealt with the dilemma of how to integrate millions of newly liberated African Americans into social, political, and labor institutions, was a period of major change in the country.

Its principal goal was to bring the southern states back into full political involvement in the Union, to preserve former slaves' rights, and to establish new connections between African Americans and whites.

Estuary provides refuge after dam removal for bull trout
Bull trout use a bewildering array of strategies to aid in their survival, from remaining in streams their whole lives, like rainbow trout, to spending part of their lives in the ocean before returning to
streams to spawn, just as salmon do.
Bull trout are present in only one of two neighboring rivers in the Olympic peninsula, Washington state, and in this one (the Elwha River), where two large dams were removed. Dam removal resulted
in massive outflow of sediments, reducing the clarity of the water and also building up a large delta and expanding the size of the estuary at the mouth of the Elwha River.
Sampling for bull trout before, during, and after dam removal was used to detect whether bull trout changed their use of the Elwha River estuary or moved into the adjacent Salt Creek stream where
they were formerly absent. Sampling revealed no movement into Salt Creek, but numbers of bull trout in the Elwha River estuary increased greatly during and immediately after dam removal,
coinciding with large sediment outflow, before returning to their original low levels. Thus, bull trout appear to have used the enlarged estuary as a refuge from the effects of dam removal, then
returning to the river when the river water cleared up from the sediment
Of additional interest is the long-term response of bull trout to the additional habitat opened up above the former dams.

What factors played a part in the early destruction of Native American culture in America?

Answers

First, there is no single Native American culture.

Second, depending upon where the tribe was located on the North American continent, different cultural forces occurred. On the Eastern side, the main invasion came from England, and the English carried diseases to which our indigenous people had never been exposed. The English had farm animals, and lived in crowded cities. They brought germs with them that killed many, many people on this continent.

The English also wanted the land. Native people lived by hunting and gathering. They needed to move as animals migrated, as weather changed, as food suppiles changed with the seasons. The English did not live that way. They had farms and cities.

Because the English had an old society based upon warfare to defend their relatively small country, they saw native people in this “new” land as an impediment to be moved out of the way so a new England could be established.

Rounding the indigenous people up like their cattle, killing the ones who resisted, not giving them the foods they needed to survive killed thousands upon thousands. Limiting their access to hunting, taking children from their families and forcing them to learn and speak only English, dress in English clothing… it all caused great suffering and tore apart cultural bonds.

On the West coast, the invaders were from Spain. Spanish people also lived in big cities, had farms and diseases They had horses, which did not exist on this continent. They also had metal weapons and guns, which native people had never seen.

The Spanish brought Catholicism and forced the natives into compliance with Spanish culture. Native people were not allowed to find their own foods, practice their own customs, teach their own children. Many were enslaved. Women were raped, and children born “mixed” were not acknowledged by their Spanish fathers.

Imagine… this was not really so long ago. There is a reason this continent is called “the New World.” European civilization, African civilization, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other Asian civilizations developed over hundreds of thousands of years.

North American natives migrated here from many places during great weather changes, but the European migration to this continent is really only a few hundred years old.

It amazes me how arrogant the descendents if the European invaders have become! They act as if they were the original inhabitants and anyone with a different culture doesn’t belong here.

Global migration, power struggles, territorial take overs, food struggles, diseases, cultural dominance… these have always gone on since the dawn of humanity.

Perhaps in the future, the indigenous people’s ways will be found to be the best for the geographical locations of the planet after all.

e total wind power capacity in the United States in 2000 was about 2540 MW. By 2015, , the total wind power capacity in the United States was about 72,500 MW. Calculate the percent change in the total wind power capacity in the United States from 2000 to 2015

Answers

To calculate the percent change in the total wind power capacity in the United States from 2000 to 2015, we can use the following formula:

Percent Change = (Final Value - Initial Value) / Initial Value * 100

Given:

Initial Value (2000) = 2540 MW

Final Value (2015) = 72,500 MW

Applying the formula:

Percent Change = (72,500 - 2540) / 2540 * 100

            = 69,960 / 2540 * 100

            ≈ 2757.48%

Therefore, the percent change in the total wind power capacity in the United States from 2000 to 2015 is approximately 2757.48%.

Question 1 (Essay Worth 30 points)

A yo-yo is moving up and down a string so that its velocity at time t is given by v(t) = 3cos(t) for time t ≥ 0. The initial position of the yo-yo at time t = 0 is x = 3.

Part A: Find the average value of v(t) on the interval open bracket 0 comma pi over 2 close bracket. (10 points)

Part B: What is the displacement of the yo-yo from time t = 0 to time t = π? (10 points)

Part C: Find the total distance the yo-yo travels from time t = 0 to time t = π. (10 points)

Answers

Part A: The average value of v(t) on the interval [0, π/2] is 0.

Part B: The displacement of the yo-yo from time t = 0 to time t = π is 0.

Part C: The total distance the yo-yo travels from time t = 0 to time t = π is 6.

Here are the calculations:

Part A: The average value of a function f(t) on the interval [a, b] is given by the following formula:

\(\frac{\int_a^b f(t) \, dt}{b - a}\)

In this case, we have:

\(\frac{\int_0^{\pi/2} 3\cos(t) \, dt}{\pi/2 - 0} = \frac{3\sin(\pi/2) - 3\sin(0)}{\pi/2} = 0\)

Part B: The displacement of a particle is given by the following integral:

\(x(t) = \int_0^t v(t) \, dt\)

In this case, we have:

\(x(\pi) = \int_0^{\pi} 3\cos(t) \, dt = 3\sin(\pi) - 3\sin(0) = 0\)

Part C: The total distance traveled by a particle is given by the following formula:

d = \(\int_0^t |v(t)| \, dt\)

In this case, we have:

d = \(\int_0^{\pi} |3\cos(t)| , dt = \int_0^{\pi/2} 3\cos(t) , dt + \int_{\pi/2}^{\pi} 3\cos(t) , dt = 3\sin(\pi/2) + 3\sin(0) = 6\)
